One of my favorite classes when I was studying to be an elementary teacher was Children's Literature. In that class I learned all about the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal awarded to the best of children's literature each year in America. I immediately began collecting these award books--from school book orders, yard sales, used book stores, and thrift stores. Now I do have to say that I don't always agree with the choices. I've read many Newbery Award books I later decided to toss, but I still have loads of award books, and generally speaking, I think they do represent some of the best children's literature in the US. While the Newbery Medal is given to a book (almost always a chapter book) for its story, the Caldecott Medal is given for illustrations.
This month I decided to fill our book rack with Caldecott Medal winners. I have loads more, but our book rack only holds so many, and the Amazon carousel only holds 10 books at a time, so I chose the ones you see below.
If you ever want some recommendations on Newbery or Caldecott Award books, let me know. I've read over 46 Caldecott Medal books and 48 Caldecott Honor books. I've read at least 63 Newbery Medal books (though the most recent I've read is from 15 years ago) and at least 47 Newbery Honor books. I have my favorites!! It's been awhile since I've purchased any new ones, though...I think I need to keep an eye out for them next time I'm in my favorite used-book store!
