Kylie at Our Worldwide Classroom hosts a home school blog hop every 2 weeks. This week's theme is "Favorite Subject." I had a post for the last theme "My Favorite Things," but I never got around to posting it. So, I'm going to include it in this post if that's okay. Sorry no pictures this time, but if I did that I'm afraid this would never get posted at all! I'll start with this week's theme: What is your favorite subject to teach (or learn alongside) your children and why?
My favorite is definitely Geography!!! I also enjoy history, literature, and science, but geography is a subject I've loved since I was a tot! Before I was born, my parents spent nearly 2 years in Germany and did a lot of traveling in Europe, so from the time I was tiny I grew up watching slide shows, looking through my mom's postcard scrapbook, and playing with the various souvenirs they had. From a very early age, I loved looking through Child Craft books and World Book encyclopedias, especially the parts about other countries. I even remember playing with my parents' big globe quite a lot! So studying other places has always intrigued me. Thus, geography is also my favorite subject to teach!
I wasn't sure how to best teach geography until I began blogging and following Jolanthe's blog Homeschool Creations. Since then, I have so enjoyed using literature, crafts, youtube videos, websites, food, art, music and lots of other stuff to study our world. So far we've traveled (through our studies) to Egypt, Ghana, Italy, India, United Kingdom, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Australia, France, Netherlands, Norway, Japan, Israel, China, Russia, and Spain. As soon as we finish with Spain, we'll head to Mexico and then finish out the school year with Germany! Those first 4 on the list were done last school year, and we just used lapbooking to study them, which was nice but too time-consuming for us. My son is just as intrigued by other countries now as I am. We both are desperate to visit China! (Not that we can afford that.) I always wanted to travel to see the world. We've lived in England the past 5 years, so that has been a great experience for all of us. We also traveled to Netherlands as a family, and my husband and I took a 10th anniversary trip to Switzerland. So, well, I guess that's all the reasons why Geography is my favorite subject to teach (and to learn) with my children!

Pretty much anything having to do with my family and with wonderful memories!
