Lapbook: The Door in the Wall

This was our historical fiction selection.  We spent 4 weeks on this unit.  I read aloud to Isaac, and he worked on the lapbook daily.

Isaac designed and made the cover. 

On the back, he copied and decorated a Bible verse which was at the beginning of the book.

Several of the minit books were made using blank lapbook templates from Homeschool Share.  I got “The Life of a Knight” minit book from a unit on knights at Homeschool Share and the two castle booklets from a unit on knights and castles from Homeschool Share (click on Chapter 3 Minit Books).

Lapbook: Justin Morgan had a Horse

Our selection for realistic fiction was Justin Morgan had a Horse, by Marguerite Henry.  We spent 4 weeks on this unit, and here is our lapbook:

I love Isaac’s cover!  My only rules for lapbook covers are that they have to have a title, be related to our lapbook topic, and be colored.  Isaac does the design and artwork himself.

For this lapbook, I printed out blank templates from Homeschool Share, and we made our own booklets.  I did choose a few pre-made booklets.  The ones about Vermont came from here and here. The American National Anthem booklet came from here.  They’re all from Homeschool Share.

Lapbook: The Apple and the Arrow

We read the book The Apple and the Arrow, by Mary and Conrad Buff.  This was our folktales selection.  We spent only 2 weeks on this unit.  Isaac designed his own lapbook cover.  I always enjoy seeing what he comes up with!

We made most of our own booklets using lapbook templates from Homeschool Share.  We also used some booklets from a unit study on The Apple and the Arrow from Homeschool Share (which I didn’t find until after we’d made most of our own)!

Lapbook: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

We read C.S. Lewis’ book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  This was our fantasy selection.  This year we spent 4 weeks on each book we read.  I read the books aloud to Isaac (a section each day), and then we would discuss it and then make a lapbook booklet. 

Most of our lapbook booklets for this one came from a LWW unit study at Homeschool Share.  The Blitz booklet came from a different Homeschool Share lapbook unit. Some of the beaver booklets came from a beaver unit on Homeschool Share.  We designed a few booklets ourselves, using blank lapbook templates, also from Homeschool Share.  Did I mention how totally great Homeschool Share is???

Isaac designed his own lapbook cover.  We put a map of Narnia on the back cover.  According to Wikipedia, this is a Disney map, although the link is not to Disney.  If anyone knows any different, let me know—I’ve seen this particular map on several websites.

      

Lapbook: Key to the Treasure

We read the book Key to the Treasure by Peggy Parish.  This was our mystery selection.  This year we spent 4 weeks on each book we read.  I read the books aloud to Isaac (a section each day), and then we would discuss it and then make a lapbook booklet. 

With Key to the Treasure, I couldn’t find any premade lapbook booklets or any unit studies using the book, so we made our own.  Some templates we got from Homeschool Share.  Others Isaac and I made ourselves (the tree, the well, and the treasure chest).  He designed the cover himself.  So anyway, here it is:

We read the book Mr. Popper’s Penguins, our humor selection.  This year we spent 4 weeks on each book we read.  I read the books aloud to Isaac (a section each day), and then we would discuss it and then make a lapbook booklet.  Here’s a look at what we did with this one:

Several of the lapbook booklets came from a Mr. Popper’s Penguins unit study at Homeschool Share.  Others came from polar animals and Antarctica unit studies, also at Homeschool Share.  A few booklets we made ourselves, using lapbook templates from…once again…Homeschool Share.  (Each Homeschool Share link takes you to a different location, and there are loads more booklets I never used, so explore away!)
