I don’t know why, but I’ve not really posted anything this year about Moriah! Last year, I did occasional posts about her Kindergarten year. Come to think of it, I haven’t posted much about Isaac either, except for the Geography units I’ve done with him. I must improve! I’ll post more about Isaac’s year next. I do take photos almost daily of everything they do.
Okay, so we’re not quite halfway through our school year, but here’s what Moriah has been doing in 1st grade. Most of these activities are from Heart of Dakota’s Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory curriculum. You can read about the rest of her curriculum HERE, although I have made a few changes since I wrote that post. This post will cover September-November 2010.
September 2010
First day of school, which happened to be in Iowa.
Some field trips we took while in the Iowa and Chicago:
A science experiment and an art project. The science experiment was covering one hand in oil and comparing it to the other hand when dipped in cold water (had to do with whale blubber). The art project was making a foil-covered cardboard shield and etching a picture on it. Greg worked with Moriah on both these activities.
On the left is a map Moriah made from a history story. On the right is a picture she drew of Helen Keller and things important to Helen from the biography we read.

November 2010
Treasure Hunt—We did this activity as an introduction to adventure stories, which was the genre of our next storytime book The Twenty One Balloons.
Field Trip to see the meerkat hay sculpture at Snugbury’s, a dairy farm/ice cream shop near where we live. They do a different hay sculpture every year.
Dancing to All-Time Favorite Dances DVD. She loves dancing, and it’s excellent exercise for her.
Experiment to see whether ice melts faster wrapped in wool or cotton. I did this experiment with Isaac when he was in 1st grade, and I don’t remember how it turned out. I’m sure we had a result, though. In Moriah’s experiment, they were about the same. Oh well.
All About Spelling—This is where I’ve deviated from the curriculum we use. When Isaac was in first grade, we used the spelling lists that came with Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory. However, when I read about All About Spelling, I knew that’s what I wanted for all the kids! I made a good decision, because Moriah not only enjoys spelling and does well in it, but I believe it’s also helped her in reading. I’ll do one of my unofficial reviews on this program at some point, because we do love it!
Snowman Math—Moriah made her own snowman. Then we used raisins to do addition and subtraction problems.
Bible—For 1st and 2nd grade Bible, I use Grapevine Studies: Stick-Figuring Through the Bible. Moriah is currently using Old Testament Overview, the Beginner Level. This is another program I will probably do an unofficial review of. Both my kids have really enjoyed it.
